.: welcome to dentou shotokan

.: class descriptions

Kids' Traditional Karate

Our beginning classes for children introduce the basic concepts and techniques of Shotokan karate training.  Some of the topics, goals, and skills developed include:

  • Balance and coordination
  • Respect and working with partners
  • Listening skills
  • Good exercise habits
  • Beginning karate techniques (kicks, punches, etc.)
  • Introduction to traditions and customs of Shotokan Karate-do

Advanced Children / Teens / Adults

Our advanced children and teen/adult students of any skill level are presented with karate training using a more scientific approach.  The focus in training revolves around learning how to generate maximum power and impact from the full body application of every movement.  Each technique is broken down and examined as a full body mass action, and not just the arm punching or leg kicking action, for example.  This is achieved by examining the purpose and usefulness of stances, posture, expansion/contraction of musculature, body timing, breath control, and more.

Group Fitness: "Karate Fit"

“Karate Fit” is not a karate class, but a group fitness session with the goal of physical conditioning.  This is a medium- to high-impact group fitness class which borrows many of the punching, kicking, and body conditioning drills from routine karate training to help improve strength, increase endurance, burn calories, reduce weight, and more. The exercises used in this class are simple, quick to learn, and performed solo within the group setting. This is a great conditioning class for ongoing karate training or for maintaining general physical fitness.
